The Zoo - Fri Feb 19
Tonight The Zoo is enveloped by a celebration of unbridled masculinity and all things masculine; beards, local beers and meaty slabs of rock & roll. The Smokestack Orchestra kick off the night, the local three piece paying homage to tonight’s headliners. Their fuzzed out blues rock wins over the close to capacity Zoo. Sydney-siders The Fumes’ main support slot tonight fails to inspire. The drum and guitar two piece fail to match sonic intensity of tonight’s other acts. “We’re probably going to sound like shit tomorrow”, not deterred by the reality of their afternoon slot at Soundwave tomorrow, veteran stoner rock act Clutch put on a show for tonight’s crowd of reverent fans. With a long history of incendiary live performances, the hard rock four piece have to live up to everything the crowd expects. And they do. Capturing a candid vibe as they jam like four dudes in a garage, Clutch delve into their massive back catalogue, as though they were trying to play everyone’s favourite track. Tonight, the lynch pin of the band’s mammoth sound is skinsman Jean-Paul Gaster. He plays with thunderous power and arresting groove on cuts like Abraham Lincoln. By the time they exit the stage, Clutch has blown the crowd’s mind.
