Gallery of Modern Art - Fri Feb 19

We can’t stop here, this is first date country. One too many Hunter S. Thompson references does not deny that there is a multitude of awkward hand touches and stuttered whispers (telltale signs of a debut union) as attendees observe the chaotic collection making up the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. “Check it out, I’m taking her to an art gallery and then there will be music…I’ll be so effing cultured she’ll jump me then and there, right?” Anywho, following the dutiful indie hitz spun by local luminary DJ El Norto, a solo set from Washington takes the sheepish romanticism to dizzying heights. Attempting cute and wistful (with new pixie haircut), without a formidable backing section, Megan Washington’s songs lack anything substantial to grab onto. The booming gallery does the young lass too many favours, but the audience response morphs from polite clapping to squealing adulation before the set’s end. Being flown out from New Zealand to play songs sounds like a pretty sweet deal; using this opportunity to spin your favourite hip hop singles from a decade ago borders on hedonistic. Ladyhawke rarely acknowledges her audience (who shuffle more than actively dance for the most part) through her blonde mane, but her decision to unofficially recreate a high school dance is well received until the wee hours of 10:30pm. It’s not exactly ‘up late’, but this most recent series merging audio and visual art organized by GoMA may prove to be the best one yet.
