Indie rock group fills big shoes in vibrant debut album
In a time where any man and his guitar can call themselves indie, Californian five-part band Local Natives stand out among a host of fleeting sensations. Gorilla Manor is a sequence of 12 vibrant and enthusiastic tracks. The drums tap like an excited and impatient child, matched by soothing vocals and followed with cheerful melodies. Toning it down for the track Shape Shifter emphasises well-written lyrics that will be swimming in your head all day. The boys have definitely done their homework, sounding like a blend between Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend. They havent honed in on their individual sound as yet and as an album it is too indebted to the sounds of predecessors to rate among the classics. That being said, this is definitely an album that you should get good use of before it, like all good indie albums, is thrown into the merciless clutches of the masses.
