ImageLanguage-loving singer AMY MICHAELS is one of the contributors to CONVERSATIONS, a jazz album that combines 10 young vocalists to tell their stories through songs. She talks to JODY MACGREGOR.

JODY MACGREGOR: How were you roped into Conversations?

AMY MICHAELS: [Organisers] Dave Spicer and Irene Bartlett were discussing the concept of Conversations, as an annual production to give young vocalists the opportunity to record and make an album. I thought it was a fantastic idea, and something that is really beneficial to artists such as myself, to work together and create a collaboration that really has a great variety of styles, songs and voices. It’s been a great experience to be a part of the whole production and help out along the way, and now we’re excited about the launch on Sunday the seventh of March at the Brisbane Jazz Club, the pinnacle of all our hard work.

JM: Is your song on the album, Cliché – a dismissal of a loser ex-boyfriend – based on a true story?

AM: Ha ha, not exactly. It’s a bit of a farce and a fun song I wrote last year. It started out as a little poem idea I wrote when I was in high school that I came across in my things and thought, ‘Ah, let’s do something fun with this.’ I’m a bit of a word nerd, so I like playing with language and making a bit of a challenge from writing. Although, in saying that, I’m sure everyone has come across someone like the guy in the song at some stage in life, I know I have… The theme of the song is based on quite a few people I’ve met along the way.

JM: What do you have planned for the Conversations launch?

AM: What a show it will be! 10 vocalists over the night, all presenting their style and giving the audience a taste of what is on the Conversations album – and even better because everyone who comes to the Jazz Club on the seventh of March will receive a free CD with their entry!  It’s amazing how different vocalists can make piano and vocal together sound so different; I love the album and all of the vocalists involved are top-notch singers and musicians, so the night is going to be just amazing.

CONVERSATIONS launches at the Brisbane Jazz Club on Sunday Mar 7. www.conversationscd.com
