Going solo
Most people who are familiar with local indie favourites Bloodpoets will instantly recognise the amazing vocals of Bec Plath. Her journey continues with the release of her debut solo EP, Unrequited. At times dark, while still containing light-hearted piano-driven pop songs, Bec has created a group of songs that she should be very proud of. The opening track, Polka Dots, will draw comparisons to Missy Higgins only slightly heavier, with its catchy melody and infectious chorus. From there on, Bec moves into her own territory. The title track, Unrequited, goes to a much darker place and shows how much fervour Bec has for her music. You can hear the passion the songs were written with and what they must mean to Bec here and on the closing two tracks, Apologise and Journey, which hold the listener’s attention from start to finish. Her captivating vocal range, plus the fact it actually feels like she believes in every word she is singing, is a very charming asset to what is a very strong debut.
