Korgs and Casiotones alive alive-O!
To go from band formation to album completion in just six months is a mammoth task, especially if you want the eight-track end product to sound right and look the business. Melbourne synth-pop trio Love Connection have pulled it off with their self-titled debut. Opening track I Know You’re Real is reminiscent of Portugal. The Man, brimming with lush guitar and keyboard interplay. Following this, Trilogy’s afro-beat drums anchor hazy vocals and mellow synths while Movements I and II take a page from Animal Collective’s guide to creating electronic psychedelia. Between the intricacy of these first two Movements, Shapes gives a momentary respite of M83-esque dream-pop. Then there’s the brief Ben Frost-kind-of-sinister Movement III (Wolfie) before the record closes with the aptly titled All Over, a seven-and-a-half minute journey through lo-fi new wave. All done in six months? Put them in charge of the new Avalanches album, please.
