QSAC - Thu Feb 25

Before AC/DC even take to the stage, the sheer number of flashing red devil’s horns purchased from merch vendors twinkle through a filling QSAC stadium, and it soon becomes evident this big sports complex is hosting THE summer party to remember. The robbers-dog-faced rock group AC/DC are forever associated with inarticulate, rum-soaked fans but the diversity of people attending this event illustrates their partyin’, hard rock anthems have captured the imagination of a far larger demographic.

First, Calling All Cars more or less provide background music for people to gradually spill into the venue. Visibly awe-struck at the gig they’ve scored, the three-piece get a few raised fists in the air, but their snottily melodic rock/pop washes over the majority of folks, who utilise the time to get more beers in.

A short-haired Andrew Stockdale leads Wolfmother through a crowd-pleasing set of stoner rock, though it’s predictably the songs from the first album that get the most vocal response (along with an excerpt from The Doors’ Riders On The Storm). The Joker And The Thief and Woman still prove the group’s live trump cards.

Peppering their set with tunes from new album Black Ice, AC/DC blow away everyone present with the sheer force of their back catalogue. As ever, the spotlight is on lurking frontman Brian Johnson, grinning gleefully like his numbers have come in down the dog track, and the grimacing schoolboy Angus Young, epic guitar solos, Chuck Berry duck walk and pantomime striptease present and correct (he pulls his shorts down to reveal AC/DC boxer shorts underneath, much to your reviewer’s relief!). Props the size of skyscrapers are incorporated into the set, including a giant, toe-tapping large-breasted woman during Whole Lotta Rosie, a giant bell (naturally) for Hell’s Bells and rows of firing cannons for the big finale For Those About To Rock (We Salute You), which is closely followed by a spectacular firework display. You want anthems? There’s heaps of ‘em, including the barreling likes of Thunderstruck, Highway To Hell, You Shook Me All Night Long, Back In Black, TNT, High Voltage and a reliably epic Let There Be Rock. It’s an evening of rock & roll showmanship at its finest.

I really was a great night. The bus trip from chermside was a laugh with lots of comediens to entertainer us. Then arriving at the stadium with Calling all cars playing in back ground. Of course beers and bourbon were bought by all of us 8 AC/DC fans who have waited for months to see the band play. After a little rain on the face Wolfmother arrives and goes riders on the storm? Then of course ACDC. We were on one of the grand stands so Angus and Brian looked like little minatures running around the stage while the other members stayed close to the drummer. A fantastic sound and more beers were bought during some of the newer songs and of course we couldnt get go and get a beer for the old songs. Great night.
