The Cubby Hole - Thu Feb 25
Upstairs at Rosie’s is hardly The Empire and tonight’s vibe is decidedly weird from the off. First on, Dirty Birds play loud and snotty garage-punk turned up to 11 for about half an hour, followed by Velociraptor who do pretty much the same thing, only sound heaps drunker and sloppier. Quietly nursing our pints, me and my friend get approached by some randoms who want to know “where to get pills around here”, then by two AC/DC fans doing the Jay & Silent Bob/Tenacious D act – rather hilariously - for the first five or so minutes.
Eventually, the clock strikes midnight and the diminutive guest of honour – ex-Smiths bassist Andy Rourke – pops on the headphones and lets fly on his MacBook. New Order’s True Faith kicks off the playlist, which quickly warps back to the ‘70s with The Clash, T.Rex, Roxy Music and Sparks tracks while Andy’s old band is represented by Bigmouth Strikes Again, William It Was Really Nothing and I Started Something. Dropped early, the Talking Heads/Basement Jaxx mashup is pretty cool, yet the rest amounts to token indie-disco fare – The Dandy Warhols, Pulp, some Arctic Monkeys etc. We dance the night away, of course, my body giving in to exhaustion in the middle of Echo & The Bunnymen’s The Cutter – but DJ Andy, it was really something.
