Melbourne singer-songwriter COBY GRANT talks to JODY MACGREGOR about her EP Fanfare For Love and her ideal rider.
JODY MACGREGOR: What’s your day job?
COBY GRANT: Oh, I have many many day jobs. It depends when I need them and how much
work I need. Never anything permanent. My favourite was probably when I was a magician’s assistant. My current day job (when I am not touring) is serving alcoholic beverages early in the morning in the Duty Free Store at Melbourne’s International Airport. Just tasters of new brands. If I have to listen to someone say, “Isn’t it a bit early for a drink, love?” one more time I could potentially explode.
JM: How long did you spend recording Fanfare For Love?
CG: Two weeks at Studio Bopnique in Boston, USA. I had an amazing time and I wish I could have stayed longer!
JM: The cover with the photo booth shots looks like it was fun. Whose idea was it?
CG: My graphic designer, John Calabro, and I put our heads together and came up with the idea. I wanted to show my personality a little and we thought it would be the perfect way to let my silly side shine! I had a ball and it was the cheapest photo shoot I have ever done.
JM: You’ve supported a lot of different acts, who was your favourite?
CG: Definitely Newton Faulkner. He was so down to earth and a lot of fun and, of course, an incredible musician. Believe it or not after the gig he had a shot of Bacon Vodka. I could not participate in such nonsense but I thoroughly enjoyed the look on his face after it went down the hatch.
JM: Do you request a rider? What’s on it?
CG: I’m not at the ‘request a rider’ level just yet but for future reference I will be requesting a cheese platter (with white castello, brie, camembert and tasty) with nachos, toblerone (white and milk flavours), M&M’s and skittles from America (as they are gluten-free there and I have coeliac disease), Red Bull, Schweppes Lemonade, salami and maybe a piece of fruit to balance it all out.
COBY GRANT launches FANFARE FOR LOVE at The Troubadour on Thursday Mar 18. See www.myspace.com/cobygrant for more.
