ImageAlternative locals THE BRUNSICKS have been beavering away on their debut LP for a wee while now, and are mightily impressed to finally be releasing it in their hometown this week. MORGAN JOHNSON tunes in to what they’re putting down.

Drawing inspiration from pop’s landscape-creating realm (think Neko Case, Wilco, Augie March) and down-homey singer-songwriters (that’s Neil Finn), the five members of The Brunswicks come together like Voltron to create something new. Their debut release, Otherwise Forever, is their musical statement.

MORGAN JOHNSON: You’re finally launching a debut LP – Otherwise Forever  – how does it feel?

THE BRUNSICKS: A colossal relief, a huge sense of accomplishment and at the same time, extremely nerve-wracking. It’s fantastic to be able to sit back and say that we have made an album, as not all bands achieve this. It’s also daunting wondering what the world is going to think and how it will be received. We’re hoping there is an audience out there for our songs and that we can continue to make music together, as it is such a rewarding experience.

MJ: Recording sessions don’t come without a little heartache – what did The Brunswicks put into the album? (And what did you get out of it?)

TB: The recording process held a little of everything (in moderation of course…). There was laughter, there were tears, there was criticism of a certain band member’s personal and oral hygiene. In all honesty, we put an enormous amount of blood, sweat and tears into the album (not to mention large amounts of our own dollars). Was it all worth it – hell yeah! We threw our hearts and souls into the project and given our time and budgetary constraints, feel that we have created an album that is reflective of our strengths and abilities.

MJ: Planning a launch party is kind of the pay-dirt for all your efforts – who is in charge of coordinating party times at Club 299 on Friday night? What can we expect?

TB: Peter, our drummer, will lead the celebrations. He will definitely be letting his hair down, if only figuratively (due to his lifestyle choice to embrace baldness…). I envisage steaming cups of chai tea followed by some soothing deep muscle relaxation, leading into a comprehensive debrief and cost/benefit analysis of the entire event.

THE BRUNSICKS launch OTHERWISE FOREVER on Friday Mar 12 at Club 299, with support from Jackalpac and Wipedoubt. www.myspace.com/thebrunswicks
