HMB Thursday Nov 23 For a night billed as The Masters Of Hardcore, the choice to open with local indie rockers The Paper And The Plane was a tad confusing. Happily they’re a quality act in the vein of Circa Survive, and seemed at home on the Basement stage in front of a swelling crowd. Melbourne’s The Getaway Plan stepped up the tempo from the get-go, racing through eight rocky screamo songs in an impressive display of their dynamic songwriting skill. My only issue was that vocalist Mathewww (sic) could have done with a bit more of a warm up. Lifting the bar again were Tuscon tourists The Bled whose scorching, bipolar-like changes of intensity caught me off guard. Seamlessly moving between the passion of Billy Corgan and the Ferocity of Dennis Lyxzén, singer James Munoz starred. Direct from the airport to the venue, The Bled’s dedication was admirable, the second set of the night benefiting from their earlier all-ages warm up. The surge of bodies to the centre of the floor signified the arrival of the main event; From Autumn To Ashes. Drenching the audience in melodious sing-alongs, the Brooklyn boys didn’t disappoint. Case in point – popular newer track Kansas City 90210. I, on the other hand was left craving a little more edge, hoping for the hardcore promised on the poster. JAMES STAFFORD
