Seattle quintet add salt, sugar to create first delicious pop gumbo
I remember years back reading that Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo had a plethora of Excel spreadsheets analysing hit songs, in order to determine just what made pop music what it is. Particularly around the Green Album, when it really sounded like they were playing by numbers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Seattle quintet The Mighty Tiger had similar lists, although their debut album sounds like such a task would be completed with loving adoration for classic pop writing, rather than clinical dissection. The dozen songs contained within traipse across the gamut of indie stylings, from the mountain lark of Rook To King to the expansive psych-out of The Most American Thing In America or Signature Cup and its morose waltz. In this post-apocalamusical world, where shades of ‘newness’ can only be derived from the synthesis of previous genres, The Mighty Tiger have taken their first confident, multi-harmonied crack at the crown.
