Power chords and damaged vocal cords
Grunge bandsin the 21st century come in two flavours. There’s the Pearl Jam-influenced ones who sound like stoned surfers who listened to Alice In Chains Unplugged a lot and there’s the Nirvana-influenced ones who sound like pissed-off werewolves. Mother And Father are the latter variety. One minute in frontman Greg Kerslake is already scratching the hell out of his vocal cords like he’s got a grudge against them. Second track Left Alone is strongly reminiscent of Nevermind’s Drain You, but on other songs the resemblance is less obvious. Oh No has a gentler, more Oz-rock vibe and Keeping, Sleeping has an almost country-rock twang. While Mother And Father do a good job of plugging the gap before the next Violent Soho, Vines or British India release there’s also evidence of a couple of interesting directions they could go in the future.
