GoMA UP LATE - Fri Mar 12
With consistently delicious line-ups and the Modern Art setting providing a real point of difference these Up Late shows have become a worthy addition to Brisbane’s cultural scene. Tonight local gentle popsters Little Scout spring softly through their set, with original keyboardist Kirsty Tickle returning to the fold. The subdued and pretty vocals of Mel Tickle and Pat Elliott are key to their growing success, though the quietly-quietly approach can sometimes feel like too many songs fade to a whimper just at the point that they’re tempted to build to a bang. It’s a temporary quibble though, as it’s a grand old time dancing along to Paper Aeroplanes.
He’s become a Bad Seed since we last saw Mr Ed Kuepper trawl through his eclectic catalogue in such a way as tonight, but you wouldn’t know international rock stardom is his again – his awkward stance, baggy t-shirt and familiar Kowalski Collective mates, including long-time collaborator Jeffrey Wegener on drums, help to make this feel more like a show down the local town hall. Scrolling through his endless menu of genres (blues, sombre country, singer-songwriter-soul, etc.) Kuepper sounds a little gruffer than usual, but this only serves to draw out the melancholy present in much of his work. Ending all too early with The Way I Made You Feel is a fitting finale.
