iPhone Guitar Application
Having patented the perennial Les Paul electric guitar back in the 1950s and extensively updated its entire catalogue, Gibson bows to progress by unveiling its brand-new gift to the 21st century players – the free-download Gibson Guitar App, now available to all Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users. Sign of the times, we say!
Custom-designed for learning guitar on the go, the neat & tidy app boasts a number of features including a traditional chromatic tuner which follows the played notes in the All Notes mode. Refreshingly, the tuner covers wide range of tunings from standard and open G to drop, low and modal to save the figuring out/head-scratching – as long as the user selects a desired option, the only notes tracked will be the ones for that particular tuning. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
When the tuner is activated in Simple mode, a Gibson headstock image will display on the iPhone screen, automatically changing colour at the tuning peg when the relevant string is sharp, flat or in tune. On the iPod Touch, the Play Notes option has to be activated so the player can hear the appropriate tuning (considering the device is not microphone-enabled).
The app also features a metronome that allows users to dial a specific BPM or tap the screen three times to automatically set the tempo, as well as thirty-plus chord charts with finger positions. Updates include video content aimed at demonstrating examples of guitar riffs, licks and chord progressions, all of which can be accessed through the video tutorials option. Lastly, the Gibson.com button links to internet-based content about new products, company-related news stories and other useful info. “User-friendly” isn’t quite the term here – this app is a godsend for both experienced guitarists and learners alike.
