21st century jazz
Just when you forget how vibrant Brisbane’s music scene is, somebody turns over a rock and you discover something completely new underneath it. The Quadratic Contingency are an experimental jazz band, making music that builds on, but isn’t indebted to, your Charlie Parkers and Benny Goodmans. Their self-titled EP begins with Girl Insomnia: a moody mix of violin and viola that prefaces Hannah Macklin’s powerful and piercing voice building up to a stabbing wail over crescendoing drums. This will keep you awake for sure. Macklin’s incredible wail continues on Sudan, this time paired with bongos and piano that sounds like it’s being played by ants running up and down the keys. Finally, the instrumental Wine Time pulls focus onto the band, with clarinet twittering around, over and through rumbling percussion like a bird avoiding some beast’s snapping jaws. This is only wine time if you’re at a lounge bar in the jungle. In only three tracks The Quadratic Contingency make me want to start flipping rocks with abandon again.

2. Written by Aaron, on 02-04-2010 17:58 I knew little to nothing about this outfit, so went to the launch and was suitable impressed with the The Quadratic Contingency, from the strong opening to the interesting final sonic moments I was quite surprised that something like this was coming out of Brisbane. I felt somewhat privileged to see this here in Brisbane at a local venue, something that I may have had to pay a lot more for on a bigger stage elsewhere. This outfit no doubt has the potential to be very world class indeed. So I bought the cd, after listening I too agree that I am very glad this rock was turned over. Well done TQC |
