Victorian France
A Melbournite singing jazz in French – no one could accuse soulful vocalist Kelly Auty of not being cultured. Auty’s vocals on this album are reminiscent of Edith Piaf, who is infamously hard to cover, as she sings effortlessly in French. Even if you cannot understand anything she says, the album is still thoroughly enjoyable. It also doesn’t hurt that French already sounds romantic and impressive no matter what. Auty’s cover of Dream A Little Dream Of Me is one of the best I’ve heard. The aesthetics of the music crosses the language barrier. Une Fille de L’est is a track that does fall flat, but if you removed that glitch, the album is as smooth and dreamy as Paris.
