Club 299 - Fri Apr 23
Equal parts a musical performance and a thinly veiled excuse to go to a sex show, Floridian industrial rockers Genitorturers draw the type of crowd you might find down the other, seedier end of the Valley. They may not have the sex appeal of tonight’s headliners, but local rockers Devilution are a perfect fit as a support. The five-piece use everything in their arsenal, from innuendo to downright crudeness, to get the crowd dancing to their idiosyncratic mix of glam metal and industrial rock. For a band whose name seems to suggest they would torture genitals, it’s somewhat incongruous to watch the Genitorturers put on a wild stage show, which for the most part seems to do nothing but glorify the genital. But even without the flashiness of their American touring rig, Genitorturers are darn enjoyable. The clothes are bad, the bass is heavy enough to get people moving and the guitars licks are cheesy and completely over the top. And while I hesitate to go into detail about some aspects of the, ahem, stage show, I’ll loudly proclaim the powerful rock & roll outfit that femme fatale frontwoman Gen commanded through cuts like Cum Junkie and a cover of The Divinyls I Touch Myself.
