The light that cannot escape
Somewhere in a dark basement on Long Island, Diskjokke is being tortured – Tidy Kid’s new EP sees this IDM phenom channelling the lifeforce of Koen Park through the Norwegian, with the pads of Gidget Controller 75 and Thumpy bearing noticeable resemblance; the eighth-note beat repeat cops a flogging, as the bearded one draws energy from urban dubstep (Reject Fly Bot) and lo-fi acoustic riffs (Toy Plane In Ice) in an attempt to bring relative structure to the work. In a little over nine seconds, They Stole Her Mother somehow further anchors the madness; technically at least, this is the most proficiency the man has had to date. Even if Tidy Kid’s projected character isn’t particularly macabre, the sound of Toxic Feelings certainly is – and it’s a sound signalling that the path here will eventually lead to this New Yorker’s final step into the inner circle of experimentalists.
