INFORMER COMEDY: Comedy Fix Debate - Liz Skitch & Emily-Jade O’Keefe Interview PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 May 2010

ImageQueensland Week celebrations kick off with the COMEDY FIX this Saturday, as comedians Claire Hooper and Josh Thomas lead opposing teams in debate with the topic: This year Queensland will turn 151 years old. Is getting older a good thing? KIRSTIE SEQUITIN quizzes Affirmative team member LIZ SKITCH and Negative team member EMILY-JADE O’KEEFE on their individual views about aging…

KIRSTIE SEQUITIN: Do you feel any wiser now than you did ten years ago? And, if so, can you share some wisdom?

LIZ SKITCH: I think I was wiser when I was younger! Or was it a case of blissful ignorance? I threw myself into things without thinking and I think that as you get older you can over think things ... I think. With responsibility comes fear and that can make it scarier to take risks. As people get older they stop doing cool things like random party snogs, taking up dares or quitting their job to travel. Some wisdom to share?  Follow your instincts, work hard and play hard!

EMILY-JADE O’KEEFE: Sure do, but I’m not sure if being wiser is any better sometimes. 10 years ago I was so ambitious and nothing could stop me. If I knew then what I know now I probably wouldn’t have been so unashamedly brazen and hungry for success and wouldn’t be where I am today. Being naive and hungry with no inhibitions can often be a bonus.

KS: When asked about your age, do you always tell the truth?

LS: Absolutely!  Lying about your age is a sign of aging – so I embrace it.

EO: I have to, my age has been printed and spoken about too many times, there is no hiding my age unfortunately. However I am proud to be 33, I just wish I looked 23.

KS: What do you look forward to doing in your Golden Years?

LS: Hot nurses, cruise ships and selective hearing.

ImageEO: It’s funny, I was only thinking about this the other day. I was speaking to an older gentleman who was still very handsome and so eloquent, wise and worldly and I looked at him and thought, I can’t wait to see how my husband turns out at that age! I’m really looking forward to getting old with my husband, he is already such a wonderful person and I believe age and experience will make him even better.

KS: What do you get away with now that you wouldn’t have when you were a teenager?

LS: Not eating my vegetables. Getting drunk with my parents. And my latest show – which involves me playing the accordion in the nude ... don’t think I could have pulled that one off because I played the flute.

EO: Ummm EVERYTHING! I can stay out late, drink till dawn, make out with my husband in my room with the DOOR OPEN, or not if I choose to.

KS: What don’t you get away with now that you would have when you were a teenager?

LS: Using “I’ve got to do my homework” as an excuse to get out of everything!

EO: Short skirts.

COMEDY FIX 2010 takes place from 6pm at the Suncorp Piazza in South Bank Parklands on Saturday May 29. Admission is free. The debate will also be projected on the big screen at Riverside Green. Don’t forget, Queensland Day is Sunday Jun 6! www.premiers.qld.gov.au/events/queensland-week.aspx
