Sleepy sounds and witchy lyrics
What do you get when you cross pagan ideas and Enya-like sounds? Something like Wendy Rule, a Melbourne witch who describes herself as a visionary songstress. The album has a very meditative feel and was actually quite successful at sending me to sleep, with many songs nearly indistinguishable from each other. Mystical lyrics are teamed with floaty music that wouldn’t be out of place in an interpretive dance performance. However, there are some standout songs: Radiate has a much stronger sound and heartfelt repetitive lyrics; John Riley is a minimalist ballad with warbling vocals; Out Of The Dry Summer has an almost-blues feel. Although Wendy Rule is undoubtedly talented, I can’t help feeling Guided By Venus would benefit from more diversity.
