The Troubadour - Wed Jun 16
Cascadeer are farewelling guitarist Zac Rush and promoting a new EP; the local six- (perhaps now five-) piece wield banjo and piano accordion to paint shades of country over their gentle folk-pop. The stage then looks almost deserted when Mary Trembles guitarist Skritch walks on with his “very fancy drink”. Unleashing original works bookended between The Cure’s A Forest and Pixies classic Where Is My Mind, more often than not his just-barely-ragged voice and garage-style reverb strike a heady balance, but occasionally the solo show feels like it would benefit from some percussive support.
The 10 members of Inland Sea re-fill the stage with their string trio, keyboard, drums and motley assortment of guitars, ukuleles and mandolins. Lush instrumental arrangements, coupled with the band’s mellifluous five-part harmonies give the Brisbane collective a quality of sound that belies their few short months together. All Fall Down’s folky melody ebbs and swells along with the wistful multi-part vocals, a fitting foil to the carefree exuberance of Summer Sun and barrelling country-guitar-and-string-driven Leaving Today. Already coaxed to their feet, it’s as simple as closing with indie-pop “dancing song” Traitor to get the crowd moving and clapping along.
