Now here’s something to sink your teeth into. One part cookie-sweet, and one part kooky-crazy, Hannah Macklin & The Maxwells will dish up freshly baked ‘kookie soul’ tunes at The Zoo on Thursday, July 15. “Before coming up with Kookie Soul, words like eccentric, oddball and quaint were wafting around in my mind… but in that, there was the danger of making my music sound like a crazy cat lady who wears dresses knitted from bread bags (disclaimer: I know someone who knits from bread bags)…” says Macklin of her newly-formed genre. Inspired by classic soul artists such as Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, and the fresh sounds of Janelle Monae, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Rufus Wainwright and N.E.R.D, blended with the wack of Bjork and Radiohead, Hannah Macklin & The Maxwells paint from a wide and colourful palette. “Bright, sparkly and sometimes a little off-kilter, with oodles of groove and lashings of funk. And soul. Soul soul soul. That’s how I’d describe it.” Hannah Macklin & The Maxwells will be joined by Band of Frequencies and Chocolate Strings at The Zoo on Thursday, July 15. Doors at 8pm. $15/12.
