QUT Guild Bar    Sat May 6

As with all shows Steve Towson orchestrates, there is a great diverse line-up on offer tonight the all ages gig showcasing eleven bands in total. From the hardcore punk stylee of Short Straw Warefare to Princess Rodeo's cool unpretentious rock to Operator Please's quirky indie alterna-rock featuring violin plus Brewers Band, The Cuts, Bad Moon CompanyThe Transmitters all adding up to some damn fine viewing. Unfortunately Brisbane ska-punks The Black Market that were billed to play had to pull out.

Self-proclaimed knucklehead hardcore punks, Mouthguard put in a sterling performance thrashing it out loud and hard in their tried and true oi style. Drawing from influences Warzone and Cock Sparrer they blazed through songs off House Of Stoush and latest split EP with UK's Drongo's For Europe. They finish things up with a Sham 69 cover.

This was one of the first shows Melbourne's Mutiny have played outside of their hometown in years. The colonial punks still have all the guts and all the fun punters have come to expect from their live shows. Mutiny previewed newer tracks from their forthcoming album along with tracks from Bag Of Oats and Rum Rebellion including Drink To Better Days,  Digging For Gold and William Jones. For some reason their set feels quite short?!

Steve Towson & The Conscripts' set starts ferociously. Steve's distinctive, brazen, electrifying musings complemented well by Ness on Cello and Scott on drums. The set a perfect balance of material from his last few releases with tunes from latest effort, Shah Mat taking centre stage. Towson's songs definitely sound much fuller with band The Conscripts, their exuberant musical offerings soaring between dizzying highs and lows while offering a fresh and adventurous take on older material with moments of indistinguishable layers of sound coating each song – yet through it all managing to remain coherent – the songs are interesting yet simple. Steve's shows are part punk rock show, part political protest – with band and new album Towson brings a much-needed vitality to the punk scene.
