JESS (vocals/guitar), MATT (guitar) and CARLY (drums) from young pop-rock quartet RAWR! VANITY, set to hone their live skills in August with Music Kafe residency, answer a few quick questions for RAVE! MAGAZINE.
To kick things off, how did the name ‘Rawr! Vanity’ come about?
JESS: I think it’s different for all of us, but for me it’s about how some people are so proud of the fact that they are so vain. I really wanted to play on the fact that so many let it be known.
I understand you met in high school – were you always friends with each other? If so, would you say you were part of the (stereotypical) ‘cool group’?
CARLY: We definitely weren’t the cool group; we were just the normal ones. And we only became friends towards the end of year 12 under strange circumstances ... I’ll leave it at that.
MATT: Umm … Define ‘cool’?
Leading up to your run of performances at West End’s Music Kafe, what are your plans for the shows?
J: My plan is to do my best rock-out and have fun. Hopefully the rest of West End will join us on the Music Kafe dance floor.
According to your MySpace, the band consists of “two kings and two queens”. How is it possible to have four rulers of state in one band?
J: We have a few people behind the scenes of Rawr who have a major say.
C: Luckily we are all understanding people; it’s all about compromise.
M: I am the King.
What would be your ideal line-up for a Rawr! Vanity band bill?
J: OMG Paramore, The Veronicas and bring back the extremely missed Repeat Offender boys.
C: I’ll agree with Jess there. Anberlin and All Time Low would be great too. Or Amy Meredith!
Finish this sentence: If we didn’t have music, then we would probably be…
J: …baking cake. Haha.
M: There is no alternative. Music is everything. And I think it will always be the biggest part of our lives.
RAWR! VANITY begin a month-long residency next month on Aug 6, playing each Friday up to and including Friday Aug 27. Their debut CD is planned for early 2011. www.myspace.com/rawrvanity
