The Rev Sat May 6 Watching three acoustic singer-songwriters at The Rev tonight, the sell-out crowd is nonetheless loudly appreciative right from the first song in Laura Imbruglia’s lyrically-odd set. Laura’s songs are funny little narratives, about her vegan punk friends, how to pronounce “kilometre” or having a dream about a magical washing machine/jukebox combination. In other hands it could all fall down as too much quirk, but her incredibly dry humour means there’s no punter left uncharmed.
Bob Evans and Josh Pyke are co-headlining this popular national tour, but Bob (aka Kevin Mitchell from Jebediah) plays first tonight, with just his guitar and harmonica. His distinctive nasal voice suits the yearning bittersweet songs, but a consecutive run of some newbies shows how little the material varies. For Today and Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head are early highlights, and while Bob’s showmanship keeps the crowd happy, it’s not until Josh Pyke joins him on keys that the show is elevated above average. When Bob leaves Josh to his set, the same-ole really sets in. I’m not very familiar with Josh’s work, but even as Triple J fans around me gleefully mouth the lyrics to slow song after slow song, it all blends into one sombre quasi-ballad for me. Middle Of The Hill is the obvious crowd pick, but again when Bob returns, the collaboration brings both performers alive. Finishing brilliantly on Guns N Roses’ Patience marks the end of a pleasant if patchy show. SIMON TOPPER
