ImageALEX STARK catches up with former Dubdoubt mainman HAYDEN ANDREWS and his drummer cohort DAMIAN CAMPBELL from dub reggae party-starters CHEAP FAKES, who are about to launch debut album Stones & Sticks at The Joynt.

ALEX STARK: Your previous band Dubdoubt had a healthy national and international fanbase. Are there any expectations for you as Cheap Fakes gets a leg up?

HAYDEN ANDREWS (Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist): I don’t think there are any expectations because we have started from scratch with this project. Cheap Fakes is made up of all new band members, performs all new songs and has new ideas with a new direction. I’m not trying to play on anything that I have done in the past and Cheap Fakes’ sound is a lot different than Dubdoubt.

AS: What did the new members brought on for Cheap Fakes bring to the table?

DAMIAN CAMPBELL (Drums): We were careful not to emulate or imitate the Dubdoubt sound, but rather build from it and add a little extra – making Cheap Fakes a far more versatile band with an eclectic, vibrant and more danceable vibe.

AS: Hayden, you created the Cheap Fakes debut more or less by yourself; what was that like?

HA: I really enjoyed making the album. I had no deadlines and recorded the majority of it in my home studio so I could create whenever I felt inspired.

AS: What is it about reggae and funk that appeals to Cheap Fakes so much?

DC: Reggae and funk music has an earthy vibe to it that people of all ages and race can relate to! It transcends all racial barriers and basically makes people feel good about themselves and the world they live in, even if for just a brief moment!

AS: How would you describe a Cheap Fakes live performance to the uninitiated?

HA: High energy, upbeat, great to dance to, good music for drinking as well. Party time!

AS: What are your thoughts on Brisbane’s roots/dub/reggae scene? Is it a supportive community?

DC: I think Brisbane has a healthy scene, which is supported by venues like the Joynt and Lock’n’Load. It is definitely a growing scene with some very talented bands getting around. The community as a whole embrace and support the scene because, like I said, it is music that appeals to everyone with a feel good vibe attached to it!

CHEAP FAKES launch STONES & STICKS (Fresh Bread Records) at The Joynt on Friday Aug 6, supported by Chocolate Strings. www.myspace.com/cheapfakes
