Overdrive/Distortion Pedal
With their honours list reading like a Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame wall – Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, Pete Townshend, David Gilmour to name but a few – Denmark’s T-Rex can rightfully claim their place among modern effect pedal aristocracy. Formed at the brink of the new millennium when most guitarists were busy ditching their rackmount units for the long-neglected, simple analogue stompboxes, the company soon hit the bullseye in terms of sales and kudos. These days, the T-Rex Replica is claimed by many gear geeks to be the best analogue delay pedal ever made while their other products also boast a considerable following. As someone who considers the words “analogue”, “vintage”, “warm” and “tone” manna to his ears, the humble me was privy to checking out the dinosaur-digging brand’s most recent offspring last week – and couldn’t help but instantly develop a fondness for it.
Christened after Mark Arm/Steve Turner’s seminal grunge outfit, the original T-Rex Mudhoney distortion pedal has been both a critical and punter smash – as Ellaways’ Mat raved to me in the shop, he hadn’t met one guitarist who didn’t like it. The yellow stompbox’s feature-packed and similarly coloured successor, the Mudhoney II is a dual overdrive/distortion pedal in the vein of the abovementioned Dirty Little Secret, but with some extra pizzazz. Combining the edgy grittiness of the first Mudhoney with an all-out rock rage of its second channel, it looks mean on the strength of its four knobs – Level 1, Level 2, Gain 1 and Gain 2, two Tone dials, two boost and two footswitches. Using either of the miniature Tone knobs, the player can shape their desired sound on either channel while Boost gives it that juicy extra kick.
A deadset “loud-louder” pedal, the Mudhoney II eliminates the need for an extra boost unit – just turn up Gain 2 before you’re ready to rip it up, stomp on the second footswitch and watch your listeners’ hair singe. Don’t fear touching it – it’s pretty sick.
RRP $549. Check out www.t-rex-effects.com and www.ellaways.com.au for more information.
