A debut that doesn’t practise what it preaches
Sydney-based four-piece Animal Shapes have gone to quite an effort to distinguish themselves as something a little bit different. If the peculiar album name was not alternate enough, they market themselves as noodley twinkle core. I highly doubt they even know what that means. We get it, you’re unusual. Despite trying not to be type-cast Calabi-Yau is a surprisingly atypical indie rock album. Ransacking The Chinese Room is an energetic start to the album. However, the rest of the album falls flat in comparison and the first track is the only one worth mentioning. Where A How Wins When A Why Tries is a track name better left in a Dr Seuss book, the actual song isn’t much better. It seems it’s all talk for Animal Shapes. Maybe they should put down the thesaurus and start making music as interesting as what they say. To put it frankly, Animal Shapes’ debut fades into the background of a music scene where everyone is trying to out-weird the next.
