Sparse re-imaginings of choice WGC cuts
Paper Covers Stone reveals a cyclical element to the musical career of singer/songwriter Robert Fisher, whose musical narratives form the basis of Willard Grant Conspiracy’s expressionistic country rock. The title is a clever play on words – in appropriating a rule from the famous children’s game, Fisher is perhaps suggesting that these cover versions are lighter, airier takes on denser source material – it’s the “paper” we get here more so than the “stone”. And it’s beautiful stuff. Fisher showcases the rich melodies that lie at the heart of these classic WGC songs, the likes of Soft Hand and Scars both sparse and stunningly atmospheric. Fisher’s grizzled baritone is in top form, the ghost of Johnny Cash looming over the hushed cello and acoustic guitar of Fare Thee Well. The album also comes with three new tracks, including a rendition of Tom Waits’ The Ocean Doesn’t Want Me. As a bonus, the Oz/NZ edition includes bonus five track EP Trunk In The Attic, providing more gruff majesty including the beautifully mournful Drunkard’s Prayer.
