While it’s not that uncommon to hear a male duo these days, it’s definitely not as common as the traditional male/female combo with matching last names. Shishkin ‘n’ Choomby are, however, refreshing to listen to and now we don’t have to fret about whether they’re married, divorced, or brother and sister. On their self-titled EP the Brisbane lads make allies of a blend of genres, using plenty of considered indie guitar with an alt-country burr and a lick of electronic sounds. Friendly Fire and Animal are two stand-out tracks, with the pair’s smooth vocals sometimes ghosting one another in haunting echoes, at other times speaking straight with little melody. Shishkin ‘N’ Choomby manage to sound wise for their age – you wouldn’t call it gloomy, more in mellow and contemplative territory, and it’s tempting to while away time mulling over the world inside their lyrics.
