The seventh annual Tribute to Johnny Cash is coming up this Saturday, November 6, at The Jubilee Hotel in Fortitude Valley. The annual Brisbane tribute was created in September 2004 to mark the first anniversary of Johnny Cash’s passing. The larger than life musician died on September 13, 2003, aged 71, just four months after the passing of his wife and long time companion June Carter-Cash. From his rockabilly sides recorded in 1955, to his multi-million-selling prison recordings of the late 1960s, his television series in the 1970s and his Rick Rubin produced albums from the 1990s, Johnny Cash remained a unique and unshakeable force in country music. His baritone voice, sparse arrangements and imposing presence set him apart from other country artists and made him a favourite amongst audiences. Special Guests
Forming for the tribute will be The Mean Eyed Cats a talented collection of Brisbane musicians including Dangerous Dan (guitar), Jon Flynn (bass) and Mark Stephens (drums). The Mean Eyed Cats will back up a special gathering of guest vocalists to perform Johnny Cash tunes, including:
Doug Wilshire (The Tailspinners) Junior Hickey (The Jim RockFords) Geoff Townsley (The Chrome Daddies) Pony Gleeson (The Ten Fours) Andy Dashwood (West Texas Crude) Miss Teresa (Her Rhythmaires) Mitchy Mayhem (Mayhem County Boys) Ol' King Coel (solo performer) Paulie Burke (His Crazy Rhythm Boys)
DJ Lori Lee will be spinning a broad choice of recordings from all of the five decades of Johnny Cash’s distinguished career. Tickets
