Blues-punk howlers from deepest London Right place at right time: Archie Bronson Outfit were spotted when they played at the head of Domino Records’ local pub, ultimately making them label mates with Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys. And although Derdang Derdang is getting a belated release here, it should have listeners primed and ready for their St Jerome’s Laneway Festival appearance on March 3. Theirs is a particularly intense and wild brand of blues rock, blended with a primal punk urgency equal parts Pere Ubu and The Stooges. Even the way they write is skewed: Drummer Arp Cleveland writes the lyrics, and guitarist/singer Sam Windett belts them out in a wild-eyed howl. Crazy stomping rock & roll such as Ritual shares space with tunes not afraid to show their pop sensibility (Dead Funny, with its intro reminiscent of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition, for example), while there’s even a Gene Clark-esque mellowness to Cuckoo enhanced by female choral vocals. And no one named Archie in sight… **** MATT THROWER
