Don’t be sucked in by the hype

Leanne Kingwell’s 2006 album Show Ya What is getting some dynamite reviews in the US, according to her press release. Baltimore City Paper has her album in their top ten list for 2006 at number one. “I beat out new releases by The Who, Def Leppard and Cheap Trick,” informs Kingwell.” Where’s her humility? Citing influences such as Bowie, The Clash and The Sex Pistols, Kingwell tries to imitate her heroes but comes up very short. Tracks one to three are monotonous and bland. Track four, Holding Your Gun, threatens to continue the snooze trend until it wakes up and kicks you in the head with its size nine Elton John-Rocky Horror-piano boots. The rest of the album is lackluster, until My Hero, a song about how much Kingwell adores her vibrator, clocks in a track 10. Overall, with two songs of interest and a whole bunch of tedium in between, Show Ya What doesn’t really show much at all.
