Shit name, great songs
The hall of fame for terrible band names has a new inductee – The DisCiPLiNES (actual formatting), a mostly Norwegian garage rock act that happens to be fronted by non-Norsk Posies frontman Ken Stringfellow. What is obvious on listening to their second record, Virgins Of Menace, is that the band thankfully spent more time penning solid rock songs than debating potential monikers. Essentially a collection of power-pop tunes played at loud volumes, The Disciplines’ songs do not labour points and rarely exceed three minutes, meaning little chance of boredom. It’s not all plain sailing and Stringfellow’s insistence on accenting melody lines with trilled vocals undermines otherwise good songs (for instance, Fate’s A Strong Bitch). However, real gems lurk in the second half of the record with the inspired guitar bridge in Strange One and interesting turn of phrase lurking in bollocking rock number AD/HD (“Jesus, you’ve been so cross since you nailed her”). Satisfying all the way through, don’t be turned off by the band’s poor use of capitalisation.
