(Big Teeth Music)
Sent to the colony for crimes against music
In my nightmare, I’m trapped in a room with Feeder’s seventh studio record, Renegades, on repeat, with no escape. I’m not beyond taking to my eardrums with an electric drill in order to cease this musical travesty – it’s that desperate. I’m sorry, Feeder fans, but from a band once known for penning acceptable tunes such as Insomnia and Buck Rogers, Renegades is a poor effort. Feeder spend most of the record dabbling in cliché, pumping out dated rock songs with embarrassingly bad lyrics, as demonstrated by lead single Call Out (“If you wanna hear this song / You just / Call out / Our name”). Occasionally they attempt to be fashionable, introducing Muse-like bass lines on Home and Barking Dog, but these efforts are crude to the point of aggravation. Opener White Lines is about the best on offer here, but even with its attempt to deal with themes of isolation, the song lacks anything to distinguish it as interesting or innovative. In the end, Renegades shows a band who probably should have considered hanging up their instruments some time ago.
