(Shock)
Wholesome Canadian femme-folk If bands are food, The Veronicas are Big Macs, Flaming Lips are cakes with hash in them, Deerhoof are a Miro-like sculpture made out of potatoes and The Black Eyed Peas are, erm, black eyed peas, chicken and lots of beer, which would make Canada’s Po’Girl a home-cooked stew full of wholesome ingredients, washed down with some organic white wine. One of Po’Girl’s members is Trish Klein, a founding member of famous folk trio The Be Good Tanyas, which should give some indication of what to expect. Their album Home To You is a down-home blend of banjos, acoustic guitars, mandolins, violins and sweet female vocal harmonies. A warm, communal feeling pervades the whole album, with all four members contributing to the songwriting and the rich, varied instrumentation happening spontaneously while never coming across as cluttered or undisciplined. These loose, free-flowing songs are guaranteed to enchant lovers of roots music. *** MATT THROWER
