ImageBands inevitably come and go, and thusly the death knell is imminent for local misfits STATURE::STATUE. DARRAGH MURRAY chats to guitarist/vocalist LUKE DUNELL about the band’s legacy and the health of the Brisbane music scene.

DARRAGH MURRAY: So why are you breaking up?

LUKE DUNELL: The immediate reason is my impending relocation to the UK, although we all feel it's time to let the brutal screeching that is Stature::Statue rest its drunken head.

DM: How do you want the band to be remembered?

LD: Hopefully as a DIY punk pinnacle rather than a DIY destructacon. Although either would be appropriate.

DM: You’re particularly renowned for your live shows; is there anything particular punters can expect at your final show?

LD: Apart from a killer local line-up, we plan to play with the raging bull chaos the songs deserve, stemming deep from a primeval well of anxiety along with teased hair and hip beats.

DM: I read your break-up show is actually your debut album launch! You’re intending to play your first (and only) record, from many ‘different sessions’.  What’s the story behind this?

LD: The self-titled record that we’re almost finished is the culmination of about six different recordings, the first snaking its way in from 2006 to a recent recording involving late night basement bangings. It's sort of a chronology of all members and the music we produced over the years; a Stature::Statue best of if you like. We will be releasing a limited edition of 100 at the show fancy DIY styles.

DM: Considering you guys emerged from the 610 DIY scene, do you have any thoughts on the recent spate of venue closures in Brisbane?

LD: I lament at the loss of such venues, and it definitely has affected the types of bands we see now. Certain hip venues serve their role as a party platform but unless you're in the know we miss out on a lot of bands doing interesting and different things that would have once played venues such as 610. But hey who’s complaining? And if you are, open a damned venue in your living room and sell some goon punch for merriment.

DM: Now that people won’t be able to go and see Stature play, is there any particular local group that you would endorse as your successors?

LD: I'd hate to be the band that takes over our ability to completely baffle a sound engineer, ruin a stage, break every string on their guitar and get into squabbles with drunken punters. I love bands like Velociraptor, Nova Scotia, Tape/Off plus the million pop bands in Brisbane.

DM: Can you tell me more about Horse Fight? How is this project connected to Stature::Statue?

LD: The only connection would be my involvement! All of us have started a brew of projects. Mine, being Horse Fight, is setting up stables in the UK, James has begun work with bands like Millions and Young Men Dead, and Damien plays with a local Krautrock band, The John Steel Singers – those guys are gonna be big!

STATURE::STATUE say goodbye to Brisbane on Thursday Apr 28 at The Zoo, supported by Velociraptor, Horse Fight, Dune Rats and Tape/Off. Tickets are $10 and available through The Zoo’s website www.thezoo.com.au. For more information check out the band's Facebook here.
