Trailer Park Boys-style humour in chaotic mockumentary
David Lawrence and Paul Spence are already cult figures in their home country of Canada, thanks to their comedy characters Terry and Dean, flannelette-wearing mulleted party animals with a special gift for (largely) self-inflicted misfortune. FUBAR: Gods Of Blunder is actually the sequel to the 2002 film FUBAR and continues their brain cell-destroying adventures. This time over, their childman behaviour continues unabated, and their prodigious intake of booze and drugs culminates in a rather hilarious scene where the share house they are being evicted from is set on fire. Looking for a new start, they head to Alberta’s Fort MacMurray to bring home big bucks as oil pipeline workers. Inevitably, things don’t exactly go smoothly, as stupidity, workers comp scams and testicular cancer conspire to complicate our anti-heroes’ lives. Yep, FUBAR: Gods Of Blunder is not a particularly substantial film, but it avoids becoming the grotesquely unfunny parody it could have been, largely thanks to the two leads’ spot-on performances (especially Spence as the one-nutted would-be rocker Dean), not to mention fine turns from Andrew Sparacino as their spectacularly self-destructive buddy Tron and Terra Hazelton as Terry’s promiscuous girlfriend Trish. Like many “bromances”, there’s a kind heart at the film’s chaotic centre. Luckily, even when the sentimentality descends, it’s sweet instead of just plain saccharine.
