BRIANA WALL braves icy winds and teetering heels so bring you her take on just some of the shows she caught at the recent ROSEMOUNT AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK in Sydney.
I’m currently in mourning, but before you shed a tear for me… It’s just the end of another glorious Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. My mission, which I gleefully accepted, was to wear my most ankle breaking, blister inducing heels and profile the wonderful talent coming out of Brisbane. So here we go!
The first of our local heroes to behold was the collection by Josh Scacheri, also known as Subfusco. Bold digital prints with loads of colour provided the perfect distraction from the bitter winds blowing outside on Circular Quay. Aptly named Elements, the collection was inspired by earth, air, fire and water. Muted pieces of grey and white with the label’s trademark tailoring and a galactic print make for the ultimate spring/summer wardrobe. Bring it on.
Later into the evening I slink in to witness the monochromatic splendor of Gail Sorronda’s most recent efforts. In a return to black and white, after a brief flirtation with colour, it is a delight to see her ultra feminine yet sharply crafted pieces. Sheer pleats and tailored blazers balance perfectly with some interesting headpieces by Melbourne’s Richard Nylon. Stem & Flow is a collection not to be missed, so make best friends with your nearest stockist.
A few days later I leave the sun outside to venture into the Talulah show. It is dimly lit with masses of candles creating the perfect Moroccan atmosphere. It was a little like traveling in a time machine with ‘70s inspired pieces floating down the runway on gorgeous bronzed girls. Designer Kelli Wharton is known for the femininity in her designs and this was no exception. The pieces had an elegant simplicity with truly versatile colours that would be right at home in any stylish Brisbane girl’s wardrobe.
So I know that Queensland is officially The Smart State, but I’m going to take you back to when we were The Sunshine State and so will the collections of our Swim & Resort wear designers.
With a blast of bohemian charm, Foxton Danger designer Emma McLean’s collection conveyed a luxury feel and the use of bright colours on hand-painted silks made her flowing pieces look just as comfortable poolside, to the bar after a day at the beach or on a yacht on the Riviera.
Karen Neilsen’s RAFW debut Jungle Lullaby made me long for summer. Acid brights on Glamazons with Lennon frames and flowers in their wild hair made me nostalgic for an era I wasn’t even alive for. Inspired by ‘70s supermodel Verushka, the collection had a playful sense of cool about it; something I can’t wait to see emulated by our local beauties.
Closing the show, the Terri Donna collection was kitschy-cute with some ‘60s glamour thrown in for good measure; so much fun with candy colours and frills on super smiley models. There was a collective “AWWWW” when the star of the show Eva, a gorgeous puppy, took to the runway proving that fashion ultimately shouldn’t be so serious.
