Do a barrel roll
Local hard rock band Junkyard Diamonds have described their sound as The Beatles and Pink Floyd being sexually violated by Nirvana, amongst a variety of other colourful descriptors. While it is difficult to comprehend what such a debauched scenario might sound like, it’s obvious the group are somewhat mischievous. Flower In A Barrel is the band’s debut record and draws influences from popular rock acts from the past 20 years, often sounding similar to the likes of Deftones, Rage Against The Machine, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Various elements from hardcore assert themselves on solid songs like Wise Words, where vocalist Mitch Rich (who often reminds me of Suicidal Tendencies’ Mike Muir) is joined by the scream of a backing vocalist during a heavy, somewhat brutal, chorus. These moments are where the band is the most exciting. It’s not all brilliant though, with some songs, such as Enjoy Your Stay, feeling somewhat directionless. Still, Flower In A Barrel is a decent first effort from young band, something that a 14-year-old version of me would have loved to death.
