Warning: hazardous, infectious pop music ahead
Victorian indie rock group Loon Lake, a group featuring three brothers and two ‘mates’, apparently play music because it’s fun. While not a particularly deep explanation for existing, it proves accurate, given that the band’s debut EP, Not Just Friends, sounds like a bunch of friends jamming in a lounge room. And despite some rough edges, Loon Lake’s obvious talent at writing interesting melodies shines through. Primarily guitar-based pop, the songs draw on an assortment of sounds reminiscent of early Kings Of Leon, Razorlight, The Strokes and even a touch of Weezer – which might sound like a bit of a shit shower, but if you can ignore the somewhat juvenile lyrics, it’s actually quite enjoyable. While In the Summer has gathered most of the radio attention, Easy Chairs, with its quick tempo, cracked vocals and power pop lineage, is the true standout on this release. Not Just Friends shows a band who can write songs you can dance to and it’s difficult to deny that Loon Lake have their charms.
