Arena Fri May 12 Vying for a spot in the Australian finals of the world-wide hip hop tournament Scribblejam, the QLD finalists showcased a healthy variety of quality emcee and DJ battlers, highlighting the depth of Brisbane’s thriving hip hop scene. Congratulations to emcee Alexander the Commander and DJ Nikk C for winning their respective battles and good luck for Australian finals later this year. The Trace Elements crew kicked off The Elements show, although their lyrical banter was overshadowed by the incredible vocal contortions of Tom Thumb. Accompanied by DJ Sampleology, Tom Thumb’s beat-box and emcee skills are winning increased notoriety. A ‘remix’ of Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean was a highlight in a set full of vocally synthesized scratches and beat juggling. Emcee crew Dying Breed then warmed the crowd for the Scribblejam battles.
International emcee battle champ Supernatural impressed his skill on the crowd in no time. Any whispers of authenticity (yep he was that tight) were blown away as he incorporated objects held up by the audience into his freestyle. DJ Q-bert emerged to accompany Supernatural and then to explain the concept of The Elements Tour. Representing the aspects that contribute to the Hip Hop lifestyle, DJing, emceeing and B-Boy break-dancing are all integral parts of the tour and the life. Q-bert seemed more relaxed DJing for the B-Boy circle than as the centre of attention, and his humility was noted as he stayed on well after 1am for signing and chatting to fans. JAMES STAFFORD
