ImageJAD DAPAT of high-tech live beats duo SCIENCE PROJECT talks to JODY MACGREGOR about their part in the upcoming Super Pocket Music Warehouse Edition.

JODY MACGREGOR: Super Pocket Music will be bringing together chiptunes, bass music, noise and future beats – which one is Science Project?

JAD DAPAT: All of the above plus more minus the noise.

JM: What’s your live gear set-up like?

JD: On stage I’m jumping between the turntables and the MPC and Grimes is playing a variety of pads.

JM: How did the two of you meet?

JD: In the rhythm section of hip hop crew Culture Connect. I was playing guitar and Grimes was on the kit.

JM: What do you have planned for Super Pocket Music Warehouse Edition?

JD: Some bio digital jazz shit.

JM: You recently released your Under The Sun EP – what’s next?

JD: We’ve also been running Dub Temple Records and we got a sting of releases coming out which we’re doing a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff for. The next Science Project beats are coming out on Voodoo Science One, which is a collaborative album between Science Project, Voodoo Dred (Melb) and Hope One (Hong Kong). We’re also working on an EP with Billie Weston on vocals, whom we featured in the Under The Sun EP.

JM: I heard you got to play with Tokimonsta – what was that like?

JD: Yeah, we played with Tokimonsta at the Red Bull Music Academy 2010 at the Family. It was wicked to see her in the flesh. Her approach to music is next level, she really did a killer set that night... and she’s fit.

JM: What’s the best way to listen to Science Project?

JD: The geek side of me would say headphones so that you can appreciate the details, but the animal side of me needs it on the dance floor.
JM: What do you think is the greatest invention of all time?

JD: The number ‘0’.

JM: What do you like most about living in 2011?

JD: So many things. We are entering an era of crazy music technologies that are redefining pretty much every aspect of music. The possibilities are becoming infinite.

Super Pocket Music Warehouse Edition is chiptune collective Pocket Music expanding to combine Brisbane’s beats scenes. SCIENCE PROJECT, Maddest Kings Alive, Godinpants, Dot.AY and WTEM as well as VJs, retro arcade games and the interactive Doomsplay installation take over Contortionist Studios on Saturday Aug 6. www.myspace.com/scienceprojectdubs
