Sing-along at first sight
It isn’t often you find yourself singing along to an album the first time you hear it. But the catchy debut album of local indie band Rhiannon Hart And The Umm-Ahh’s does just that for first-time listeners. A combination of pop, funk and jazz, the album’s songs are fun and upbeat. The merry music is also reminiscent of the 1950s, a style that matches well with the quirky lyrics. The songs tell of both adventure and misadventure in love – exploring the “fatty fat times” that you experience in a long-term relationship and the Facebook stalking that happens after a break-up. Rhiannon has a confident, almost husky voice that mixes perfectly with the guitar, bass, drums, keys and, at times, ukulele. And although some songs lack the climactic ending desired, the album certainly finishes with a bang – Choices giving Rhiannon an opportunity to let her powerhouse voice loose. A fun album, it will certainly be interesting to see what the band comes up with next.
