BCEC - Sat March 10

Opening act, Brisbane’s self-proclaimed modern, creative and unique pop-punkers Take 21 whine their way through a short set. There is nothing modern, unique and I debate the creative part about the performance – it’s all been done before, and better!

Avalon Drive hit the stage with an abundance of energy that’s maintained throughout the set. However – how can I put this any other way – the set itself is dull, generic, safe; all those things that make you want to stay home and watch DVDs instead. Don’t even get me started on the annoying adolescent-sounding vocals. They have positive messages in their music and kids seem to love them – although the crowd’s reaction tonight is far from ecstatic – I don’t see what the fuss is about. AD have been called ‘the most promising rock act on the Australian scene.’ If this is the future of Australian rock, shoot me now.

For all the hype surrounding Chicago band Fall Out Boy, one thing is clear – the shining light of the group is vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump. Without his unique voice and catchy well-crafted songs I doubt this band would be as popular as they are (we won’t take photos of bassist Pete Wentz’s genitals being leaked onto the net into account).

For most of the hour-long set the crowd sings every word, the bulk lifted from Infinity On High. Towards the set’s end they play hit, This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race, sending the crowd crazy. Songs that follow don’t seem to hold the audience’s attention as well, the band receiving several bottles, shoes and other debris on stage. They started strong, following a Kanye West introduction, but as it went on it just kind of fizzled out.

bianca... u have no idea. firstly the bulk of FOB's set was not taken from their new album and secondly our brissy boys take 21 and avalon drive were awesome.

maybe u would be better fitted reveiwing a missy higgins concert...

Sarah, what a ridiculous statement to make.

1. I doubt Bianca cares whether or not you like the local Brisbane "talent". She gave examples of why she thought they weren't good, what more do you need?

2. You have no authority to dictate what a good band sounds like. YOU might think they were good, but does that mean everyone else has to agree?

Music is subjective. Plain and simple.

Good review. Much better than reading these safe reviews that get praised.

I'm sure many people would have to disagree with you Bianca.

thank u emily :grin

i have checked out the myspace profiles of Avalon Drive and take 21 and there were no comments giving ANY negative feedback about their sets.

So maybe Bianca, your reveiw is pointless seeing it only dictates ur personal veiws on the concert. you could have at least mentioned the great crowd support recieved by the 2 opening acts.

so now people who read ur lame-ass reveiw who didnt go to the concert will assume the openers were crap when really it was ur crap attitude towards the whole concert which prompted this poor reveiw.

congratulations, u are an idiot.

did it ever occur to your sad little fangirl self that there were no negative comments on the AD or Take 21 myspace because they were written by FANS and not trained writers and critics with several years experience in the punk community?

Anyone who writes 'u' instead of 'you' is an idiot. Ask a primary school english teacher, and they'll tell you the same.

I missed take 21 so cant say anything about them. However I did see Avalon Drive and I thought they were amazing! About the only thing I agree with was when you said "Avalon Drive hit the stage with an abundance of energy that’s maintained throughout the set" I remember thinking how popular these guys seemed when listening to the screaming and clapping from the audience as they made there way onstage. "annoying adolescent-sounding vocals" what the?? The singer is nowhere near adolescent and certainly doesn't sound anything the way you r portraying. I thought they were fantastic!! Fantastic vocals, catchy lyrics and amazing to watch!!To be honest I enjoyed them more then Fall out boy!! And to DEAR SARAH - "punk community" what the??? Maybe that was the problem I wouldn't count any of those bands as punk. And after all its these FANS you talk about that will be buying the cd's not some random critic.

hey, im from Take 21.... the opening band. lol, seeing all these comments is funny. people seem to be really annoyed about the reveiw.

Speaking on Behalf of the band, we thought it was great!! it was our first 'BIG' show and if people didnt care about us then they would write something nice, haha. but seeing we actually made a statement on the night, we got a bad review similar to the 2 awesome bands after us :D

Everyone at the shows knows the whole concert was awesome and that's all that matters. Think about it, have you ever seen an awesome movie which ended up getting a crap reveiw??? most likely. So this reveiw to us really just shows that we are being recognised as a band nowdays, not just a bunch of schoolkids.

Bianca,
What sort of music do you listen to?
Some how I doubt that your music of choice is rock or punk otherwise you would realise the error of your review.
"AD have been called ‘the most promising rock act on the Australian scene. If this is the future of Australian rock, shoot me now."
I am aware that this is just one persons review on the concert, however when one is in a position where their 'review' is read by thousands of people you should perhaps research your subjects further before passing comment about their potential as rock stars.
I was at the FOB concert and was well impressed with the quality of music from all the bands performing, especially that of Avalon Drive.
Avalon drives lead vocalist Damion Page has an incredible voice that compliments their style of music, one that could not be described as 'annoying adolescent-sounding vocals'.

'the set itself is dull, generic, safe; all those things that make you want to stay home and watch DVDs instead' Is this what the Yellow Card fans thought when they demolished baracades during Avalon Drives performance at Luna Park in Sydney, forcing the delay of the headlining act and the cancellation of the other support band? I think not.

It seems that you gave all performers from that night a poor review, perhaps you should have consulted any number of people who attended and I'm sure you would find that the dominating, or even unanomous review would be that all bands performed brilliantly and did not deserve such a rubbishing from someone who clearly does not know much about the scene they review.

It sounds like Tristan might be Bianca's pseudonym. For all the liberal overtones of "music is subjective" he seemed pretty worked up about the whole thing for someone who didn’t write it. Maybe he’s dating her dating? Who knows? :)
But seriously, that was a pretty slanted review. I have no problem with that though, like Tristan was alluding to, freedom of the press in what they write is important. But not when people are trying to pass off slanted, misinformed views as a fair and balanced representation of a performance.
I don’t think what Bianca wrote was even close to accurate. It’s obvious from the tone of her writing that punk isn’t her thing. I think like Sarah said she'd fit in more with the 40+ wine and cheese set of Missy Higgins set than at an AD or FOB concert.
As a journo Bianca had a duty to at least give a fair review of the concert, and not to slant it with her obvious dislike for the genre. It’s just frustrating when individuals in the media don’t realise the influence they can have on a bands success by overtly prejudicing their review of a performance.
All I’d say Bianca is next time you do a review of a punk concert, at least be upfront and say you don’t like the music? If it’s not your thing, then it’s not your thing I can respect that. But to say that that review was good, fair, and well researched journalism, in my opinion, would be about as accurate as your story was.

Jesus people, until robots & computers start writing band reviews, your gonna be presented with personal opinions of the band and the atmosphere on the night. If your a fan of these bands, suck it up and accept that other people arn't. I'm willing to bet Avalon Drive is not going to experience a drop in record sales because Biancia thinks they are lame.
Lighten up for fucks sake.
14. Written by Dear Ghost Writer, on 15-03-2007 08:31 , IP: 143.238.157.212
Bianca has been writing about punk music for several years, and has interviewed just about every significant artist in the punk and hardcore community - internationally. If you've read an interview with a punk act in Rave in the last 3 years, she probably did it. Her knowledge of the scene is extensive, which is no doubt why she gave this gig a middling review - she's seen it all before, and seen it done better.
If you had done any research at all, you would realise this. Which is why her writings are being published, and yours are confined to the 'comments' section on a website.

I dont hold myself up to be a "jouranlist" thou mate. I dont need to do my research. If I was paid to write piss poor reviews Im sure I could get a gig at rave too.
16. Written by "jouranlist?", on 15-03-2007 09:56 , IP: 143.238.157.212
I've no doubt your reviews would be piss poor given your spelling.

Have you even read anything else by Bianca? Don't judge a writer on one review. It's very, very ignorant.
17. Written by Ghost writer, on 15-03-2007 10:20 , IP: 60.226.44.120
Are we in grade six? Are you going to call me fat now you picked on my spelling? It was a quick post killer, I mis-spelt thou too if we're being picky.

But my question to you is, are we not allowed to criticise? Is she too precious to accept what was a first instance a fair comment on her writing? Should we just accept what she says because her 3 years reviewing experience makes her infinitely more qualified than any of us to pass judgment?

And I don’t see how her other work affects this. I’m not saying she’s a bad writer, I’m just saying it was a slanted review. It wasn’t a fair representation of the facts. In that case I don’t need to read her other work, it’s probably fine, but this one was ordinary (in my obviously lowly opinion.... pppffffftttt)

I totally support Bianca's opinion. I especially support Bianca's right to have an opinion.
You're being manipulated kids, which is amusing, but don't take your inadequacies out on other people.
21. Written by Tristan, on 15-03-2007 16:49 , IP: 210.49.132.230
No, I'm not dating Bianca. Nor have I ever met her before. However I can recognise someone worth listening to from the posts they make. And sadly, nearly all of you have a stupid notion that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong.

What I've tried to say here, and in many of the other reviews, is that you need to have an open mind with these things. It got a bad review...By 1 person....Need I say more? Write your own review if it makes you feel special inside.

Think about it. If every review was sugar coated, not only would it be boring to read, but it would be lacking in any real substance.

I heard a funny saying a while ago. It goes like this: "Opinion is like body odour. Everyone has one, and no one likes anyone elses."

So enough saying "you're wrong because I was there and it was good". The reviewer said why she didn't enjoy it, and justified why she didn't like it. And that my friends, is what a review is all about.

P.S. To the moron who said "i have checked out the myspace profiles of Avalon Drive and take 21 and there were no comments giving ANY negative feedback about their sets."

Give me a break. Have you any ounce of intelligence at all?

Bianca: Keep these sorts of reviews coming. It actually makes me want to read them each week.

avalon drive and fob were awesome but take 21??? i dont know how the hell they got a support act at the convention centre, they wouldve been more at home at the local rsl. i know heaps of kickass local brissie acts that would have been way more suited to that concert.

i have no disagreements with any of bianca's comments. yes, take 21 did whine, AD also whine too, and the same with FOB. the theme for the show was whine/emo. Im glad a member of take 21 has to get up on an internet forum to defend his band from one persons opinion. but hey, kudos to take 21, they got a write up in RAVE magazine.

not everyone has to like a band, but if you're writing for a other people to read, you should at least write something nice so that other people will be like "oh lets go and check out Avalon drive" im a fan of Avalon and i don’t care if you like them or not, i just get pissed off when people write ill-informed article's about them.

ok so we have to be able to "hack" a bad review, yeah the AD boys are going to get them from time to time, they're not a band for everyone... but my question to you is, if the bands have to be able to take this bad critisism with a grain of salt why can't the journalist take the bad review she is coping from the public, who, by the way are her audience! what's the difference? i respect that people all have different opinions and different tastes, but i just can't see why she shouldn't have to put up with a bad review of her work! anyway i heard that all bands kicked arse that night!

P.S: if you can't come up with a better response than to attack someone's spelling then don't bother wasting your time and ours.
39. Written by Amanda, on 21-04-2007 10:06 , IP: 58.110.89.25
The review might have been slightly harsh, and fall out boy mainly played songs from their earlier two albums, with only approx 5 songs from their latest.

I was there and compared to every punk emo alternative indie
performance i've seen since 2004 i was slightly disappointed by the show.

I find that when i go to see a show in a big performance space such as the convention centre or the entertainment centre, that the shows are never quite as good as say a show in a smaller venue such as the arena, the zoo, the tivoli, or what used to be the rev. Bands have a harder time controlling the audience, becasue of the size of the audience. Needless to say Millencolin's september 2005 performance and Death Cab For Cutie's 2006 performance, were both at the Arena, and i was disappointed in both bands, because they did not interact with the audience at all, they just played song after song.

But i think Fall Out Boy should be commended as they did attempt to communicate with the audience between songs, although not to a great extent.

But really, when you take a look at the audience at the gig i would take a guess at saying that 50% of the audience were either people who never been to a gig before, or people who only go to big advertised events, such as Taste Of Chaos at the entertainment centre and the story of the year performance at the convention centre last year. Therefore of course because of their lack of knowledge about live gigs they are going to defend a bad review.

Because these people don't often see bands play, they have no real idea what a good gig is.

Also the age of the audience being 14 or 15 years old, affects the way they think the concert went.

Unfortunately I did not arrive in time to see Take 21 play. But I was impressed with the Avalon Drive set having seen them play 3 times now and was also suprise at the number of people in the audience who like me knew the words and were singing along. I don't they attempted to warm the crowd up for Fall Out Boy as well as they should have, because thats what they were there to do.

Also i think the attacking of each others

speeeling misteaks (LOL) is childish, forums are usually a relaxed form of text, where spelling that is commonly found in the context of msn messenger or text messaging is used.

dis is cos its quickr to typ & der is no need 4 4mal spelling conventions.

And of course the fans are not going to write bad reviews on bands myspaces, and if they did the band would delete the comment anyway. And of course take 21 are going to delete a bad review of themselves that was posted ontheir own website.

And yes the theme of the 3 bands that played is whine/emo and thats what they played, so why expect anything else. Except maybe Avalon Drive, who can produce songs that are a bit heavier.

I'm going to see take 21 support billy talent and again at the used, so i guess i will expect to them have taken the critism, and perhaps worked on what could make them a better band. Because if i were in a band and got a bad review i would ask myself of=k why didnt they like, what can i do to improve, just the same would happen if i recieved a good reivew i would ask myself what was it that worked and how do i then improveon the working formula.

I think for a band who are apparently 17 years old they are going well, i mean these guys arn't even allowed to drink in some of the places they play. So i commend them on their accomplishments.

Most of the people i knew who were in bands when i was in high school, have either broken up or not reached the achievement for supporting an international act at the convention centre.

And yea being 17 years old their mindframe is going to be in that which is say reflected in a new found glory song.

Someone said that there were so many other local Brisbane bands that deserved to be supporting on that stage that night, but i ask, why, I mean we need to give everyone a go, even if it means that we give some bands a go and they fail at it, gives us and the band a better idea of whether they are going to succeed, or what it is in their band that they need to improve.

I am not sure but if Bianca has been writing about the punk scene for several years i would imagine that she is a lot older and probably a bit more mature than the probably 15 or 16 year olds who are dissing her review, but then again i could be wrong.

oh by the way the whole reason i came accross this article was because i was looking for some info about take 21 since i didnt get much of their myspace and their website is being upgraded. So this has given me some insight into they way brisbane people see the band and the various modes of support they recieve

TAKE 21 are a really good local-ish band! i have seen them live twice now and they rocked both times. AD were really good as well. but it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks about a band its what u believe and no one else can change ur mind unless ur an idiot!!

and SAX's comment is definatly from him as i have met him before and that is so him.

and with the comment from James "Sax, i dunno if you really are from Take 21, but I think the singer had some real talent. It was just the drummer who I thought didn't belong." :(:( yes, the lead has good talent AKA Mikey!!![hes hawt!!]:p

Fooman's Shoe - I read where Take 21 deleted the bad review you posted. I saw there site and it was cut and paste of this review - YOU PUT IT ON THEIR SITE ABOUT 20 TIMES - no wonder they took it down. And then I did some research about you guys and found out that you were THREE DIRTY BIRDS - jealous are we for other bands achievements??? To set up a false myspace to attack other local bands - YOU GUYS SHOULD BE ASHAMED and change your name to Three Snotty Boys.
