March 15 is a new beginning for THE PAPER & THE PLANE. Guitarist PAUL VOGE and bass player REMY BOCCALATTE talk to KATH POLLOCK about the self-described progressive rock band’s history; the launch of their debut, An Introduction; and the creation of new and different songs.
Can you tell me a little about the band? Paul: We’ve had different singers, four bass players…we’ve had a lot of line-up changes, but since Remy joined, everything’s been going up and up. Remy: This is the collaboration of people that’s worked the best, in regards to egos and musical talent and ideas. Paul: We don’t have the luxury of knowing what we’re gonna sound like. Every song is different. When we started a new song the other day, it started as a poppy, upbeat song and ended on a downer. When we started it, you never would’ve thought it’d end that way. And how it got to that stage, I don’t know. How does it feel to finally have a recording coming out? Paul: I’m relieved, because people have been waiting on it for a long time. I’m glad we’ve got something out, but the reason we’re calling it ‘An Introduction’ is because we’re going straight back in to do a new one. To do something that’s more our sound of ‘now’. From March 15th we’re starting afresh. Remy: It’s the next stage. Paul: We’ll be thinking six months ahead, instead of thinking ahead to the next show. Will people have heard the tracks on An Introduction at shows before? Remy: Everyone would have heard them before, but they’ve all been refined a little bit. Vocally there’s a lot more changes than anything else. You guys have a very beautiful and emotional sound. At shows it sounds extremely passionate and energetic. Was this difficult to capture in the studio? Paul: Vocally, I think we’ve captured that as much as we can. Remy: I think we try and transfer energy across in any song. On your MySpace, you say that you’re “not all doom and gloom.” Do you think people have the misconception that you are? Paul: I do. People have said that. Remy: The songs that we’ve recorded are a bit slower and darker… Paul: People don’t hear the rockier songs we’ve got. Remy: But I don’t think we’re doom and gloom. We have so much fun on stage. Where will people be able to get the new recording? Paul: It’ll be at the show, and at Kill The Music and Rockinghorse. What can folks expect at the launch? Paul: Us, nervous. Remy: I think a lot of fun. I think a lot of energy. The usual Paper & the Plane energy, but on a bigger scale. Head to The Zoo for the launch of An Introduction, this Thursday, March 15, with Arrows and Hanabi (also releasing recordings). Underage fans can celebrate the launch at Kill The Music, Saturday March 31 at 1:30pm. Be there!

4. Written by Katrina, on 23-04-2007 12:29 saw the paper and the plane at the globe the other night and were so impressed by them. have 'an introduction' on repeat at the moment. can't get it out of my head. love them. can't wait for more. do yourself a favour and see them live. Awesome. |
5. Written by kat, on 08-06-2007 13:08 saw them last night, they werent the best support act around. my friends and i thought their music was too repetative and the lyrics were sub-par. The vocalist seemed like he was constipated and had a headache. Hope the guitarist's ankle gets better... |
6. Written by horatio, on 08-06-2007 18:00 i saw them open for brand new last night at billboard. they were great! i have a feeling im really gonna get into these guys |
7. Written by G., on 14-06-2007 17:59 Kat, your comment both ammuses and saddens me. If you cant appreciate creative music and lyrics with substance then I suggest you stick to Blink 182 and Good Charlotte. Oh, and maybe track down a new crew with taste, its not too late for you. |

10. Written by Tyson, on 24-06-2007 18:39 I want the new record to sound like the songs of An Introduction. They are dark and have that meaningful vibe alot of bands lack, and the songs are mellow, yet epic at the same time. Vocals are amazing. I wish I didn't miss them at Brand New. |
11. Written by jess, on 28-06-2007 15:43 I saw them at Brand New's show in melbourne!! they where great, i loved them!! I swear these guys can really play |

13. Written by kat, on 04-07-2007 12:17 in response to G: we merely think that the vocalist needs some work. maybe he was sick on the night or something, the fact of the matter is. good charlotte and blink 182 suck. and btw, im not judging any of you by the fact that you are embracing them, its only natural. but i dont find their music entertaining. thats my opinion. |
14. Written by Alex, on 08-08-2007 20:51 saw them at brand new in sydney, they were absolutely awesome. (Y) (Y) can't wait to hear more. |
15. Written by wearespirit, on 03-11-2007 13:39 this band has some serious potential. its somewhat difficult to not let your emotions get the best of you while listening to those vocals |
16. Written by Linda, on 28-11-2007 11:33 If The Paper and the Plane are from Brisbane, then I can conclude that Brisbane have produced some of the best rising talents I've seen recently. |
