Colonel Mustard, candlestick, billiard room
It’s refreshing to learn new things. In considering local indie pop group The Clues’ debut EP I discovered that a ‘yocto’ is a metric system prefix denoting 10^-24, often used to state the mass of a subatomic particle. I LOVE FACTS! Anyway, The Clues write sprawling pop songs designed to engage the hopelessly romantic and speak in tones similar to Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Folds and even The Whitlams. While this type of music may seem ubiquitous, The Clues manage to make it fun, putting their best foot forward on songs like This Year, a bright pop song with a great bridge section of overlapping melodies. It’s often the little moments that prove pleasing. The cute synth phrasing throughout Smoking Is Hazardous To Your Health sounds like it’s been lifted from a ‘70s children’s educational television program. Depending on your tolerance levels, the only drawback is some indulgent jamming on songs like Kiss & Tell and Cold, which see The Clues stretch the meaning of the term EP, Yocto coming in at around thirty-three minutes. However, this an agreeable local release that deserves attention.
