Matchbox Twenty with balls... and a chimpanzee
Local boys Upsize return with their second EP, a “blend of in-your-face rock and anthem-like choruses”. The band are a classic line-up of vocals, guitar, bass and drums, doing a classic rock sound that is so synonymous with the genre that I need not describe it in great detail. It is a pop-rock menagerie of strong, American-accented vocals gurgling a slew of ‘hey’s, ‘yeah’s and ‘ow’s. Hearing the Aussie harmonies is actually a cool contrast, but I won't pretend it’s intentional. The sound seems a shoe-in for the Triple M demographic – there’s even a picture of ‘Barry’ on the cover, which seems oddly Freudian. It’s certainly all very solid, but has been done to death: over and over again. It’s not a bad listen as such, but if you cringe at commercial radio, you won’t have a good time with this. JAKEB SMITH
