(Independent) Local alt-rockers are trying to get out From what I can discern, Reveler (previously Retrospect) are a good band playing music that no one really cares about. The band have a long history of winning band competitions, getting played on radio and television, supporting big touring acts and being local headliners at festivals. Yet after all of that they have not truly broken-out of the local scene. Now, is this an indie review or a cultural critique? Well both actually, so sit tight. Reveler's music – a heavy alternative rock – is simple and palatable: pop structures and vocal melodies abound. This accounts for the accolades the band have received thus far: they are a safe band. The inherent obstacle is that the music is a smidgen too alternative to be truly mainstream, and the songwriting a touch too mainstream to be truly alternative. No man's land is a cruel place, for despite the band having a respectable local following, there seems nowhere for them to go. JAKEB SMITH
